OTTAWA - The New Democrats are proposing a national child-care program that NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says would cost no more than $15 a day per child.
Mulcair says an NDP government would work with the provinces to support or create a million child-care spaces over a period of eight years.
He says the program would be enshrined in law and have predictable, long-term financing.
The first step, to be brought in over four years, would fund 370,000 new spaces with an annual investment of $1.9 billion.
By the time the whole program is in place in eight years, the annual federal contribution would have increased by $5 billion, the party says.
Mulcair says the program will offer quality child care at an affordable price, with measurable benchmarks for judging success.
